"One of the biggest tragedies in Robert E. Lee's life was that his dad disappeared and never talked to him again. Robert E. Lee was just a child this gave Robert E. Lee a hard time as a child. Robert E. Lee had thought the Federal government had let his family down by taking over his family property and turning it in to a cemetery."-Ms. Christina Vida, Virginia History Fay Coordinator-Virginia Museum of History & Culture.

With all Robert E. Lee's devotion to the union and the feeling of loyalty and duty of an American Citizen, Robert E. Lee was not able to make up his mind to raise his hand against his relatives, his children, and his home. Rebelling against the United States cost Lee dearly. He lost the Confederate nation he fought for. He lost his family’s Potomac River estate. He lost his rights as an American citizen.
