After graduating second in his class of 46 from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1829. Robert E. Lee was commissioned into the Engineering Corps. Robert E. Lee was appointed superintendent at West Point from 1852 to 1855 when he left to become lieutenant colonel in the 2nd Cavalry in Texas.
